Circles
of Support Circles of Support provides a group support network within the Latino community based on the Popular Education Philosophy that we can all learn from one another's experiences with the learning process derived from the reality surrounding the student. Our groups meet free of charge, once a week for 2 hours over 12 sessions with each session facilitated by 2 peer educators. Throughout each session, participants speak about their experiences and receive feedback from others within the group. Some of the techniques used in the groups include relaxation, meditation, visual imagery and biofeedback. Does it work? A 1986 study conducted in Virginia with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) patients who had attended 8 to 14 sessions of biofeedback and relaxation training showed improvement of their symptoms ranging from slight to marked. A 2000 study conducted in post war Kosovo revealed that high school students who attended a mind-body skills group for 6 weeks had significantly reduced their posttraumatic stress symptoms. We have conducted over 20 groups and have served over 220 participants in the five boroughs of New York.
