2007-2008 Program Accomplishments

| General |
|
- CHCF received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for a second consecutive year. Only 15% of the charities rated have received at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations.
|
| |
- In October 2007, CHCF was named NY1’s “NYer of the Week,” an honor awarded to organizations and individuals giving back to the New York City community.
|
| |
- Elba Montalvo, CHCF Executive Director, received the 2008 Women in Public Service Leadership Award from the Center for Women in Government and Civil Society of the University at Albany, SUNY .
|
|
| Child Care Services |
|
- 3,753 parent consultations for child care throughout New York City were provided.
|
| |
- Child care providers received approximately 492 hours of intensive face-to-face assistance from CHCF staff, helping to make their programs more well-rounded and enriching for the children in their care.
|
| |
- CHCF hosted the Sixth Annual Latino Family Day Care Provider conference, the only professional development event for family day care providers in the city to be held entirely in Spanish. This year, CHCF added workshops for parents and invited them to attend. 120 providers and parents attended from all 5 boroughs.

|
| Youth Development |
|
- CHCF served 720 students in after-school programs, 544 students in drop out prevention, 90 students in responsible fatherhood, and over 900 students in adolescent pregnancy prevention programs. The adolescent pregnancy prevention program was expanded to MS 391 to better serve the needs of the community.

- This year, for the first time, CHCF obtained funding to implement family literacy programs simultaneously at two after-school sites: PS/MS 279 and PS 59, as well as enough funding to assess the program by an outside evaluator. In total, 20 families participated.

|
| Family Health Education |
|
- 1,859 individuals were reached during outreach at churches, consulates, and events about HIV prevention and domestic violence awareness through Proyecto Gol (Project Goal) and the Latino Religious Initiative.
|
| |
- 97 people, including 52 adults and 45 children, participated in our Healthy Living Summer Program, which emphasizes the importance of nutrition and exercise while incorporating the Latino value of family. This program was developed to respond to the emerging health crisis affecting the Latino community: obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

| Latino Family Policy Center |
|
- CHCF convened another groundbreaking coalition called the Latino Coalition for Early Care and Education (LCECE), an advocacy group committed to increasing the availability and quality of culturally and linguistically appropriate child care and early education for Latino children and all English Language Learners (ELLs) at both the city and state levels.

- On June 24, 2008, LCECE convened a forum to bring attention to the key issues affecting ELLs, which attracted 120 participants. The forum featured presentations by key officials and stakeholders in the field of early care and education such as Gladys Carrión, Commissioner, NYS Office of Children and Family Services, and Manuel Rivera, PhD, Deputy Secretary for Education, New York State.

- In March 2008, CHCF released the report “Domestic Violence and Latina Mothers’ Experience with ACS,” which provides recommendations to effectively address the needs of Latina mothers who are victims of domestic violence and have cases in the child welfare system.

| |
- With funding from the New York City Council through the Immigrant Opportunities Initiative, CHCF provided classes for 314 individuals in Civic Education & U.S. History and assisted 35 individuals with the N-400 citizenship application.
|
|
|
| International Activities |
|
- On July 2, 2008 CHCF, the International Forum for Child Welfare (IFCW) and the American Association of Jurists (AAJ) co-sponsored a forum at the United Nations titled “The Rights of Immigrant Children from an International and Human Rights Perspective.” Well-attended, the forum highlighted CHCF’s growing voice in the international child welfare arena.

- CHCF was selected to host the 2010 International Forum for Child Welfare Conference.
