Once a childcare provider establishes a new business, the next step is to get the business basics in order, which is critical to success. After determining if he/she is are ready to establish a family childcare program in the home, the first steps should be to:
- Determine the business (legal) structure of the business;
- Register the business name (“Doing Business As”), which is optional, though highly recommended;
- Obtain a tax identification number (“EIN”), which needs to be completed as part of the license/ registration application; and
- Determine the state tax obligations.
